The Donkeys!
One of our significant expenses is the ‘tools’ we need to care for the animals.
Once here they are safe, but that is when our biggest expense really begins; a commitment to their lifetime care, which not only includes food, hay, straw, vets, farrier, dentist, but the periphery items, which are vital to the day to day operations of the sanctuary.
Some of these essential items and costs are listed below...

The Horse Lorry... is needed for urgent rescues or taking an animal to the veterinary hospital. The rescue of Paddington and Penny was tenuous when the lorry broke down and the two frightened donkeys had to be transferred to a trailer on the side of a busy main road in the dark during a windy night and hailing. Repairs to the lorry can cost thousands.
The Utility truck... is used every day to drive across the paddocks to put extra hay out when needed, to put on and take off
rugs as the weather changes or to get to an animal in need urgently.

The Tractor and Paddock Sweeper... are vital pieces of equipment for keeping
the paddocks clean and clear of debris, which is important in maintaining a high
level of health and welfare for our donkeys and horses - they need constant
maintenance and sometimes require new parts.
The ‘Grillo’ Truck... needed for carrying hay and straw to the donkey barn also needs constant maintenance, which costs money!

Two Dumper Trucks... are used for the daily "mucking out". Each animal produces a
whopping 1 tonne of manure each year, which all has to be carried to our muck heap.
The muck heap is removed every two weeks, costing £50 per load at 17 loads a time...
The Skidsteer... is used to completely clean out the huge Main Barn twice a year and is used in emergency situations for assisting
as lift equipment if an animal goes down and cannot get up.
Saving, helping and caring for donkeys is what we are all about, raising funds and getting them to safety brings relief after the stress and anxiety of the ‘rescue' and if it is a sick donkey, not knowing if they will even survive... Even after getting them to sanctuary following x-rays and blood screening by the vets, sometimes, heartbreakingly, we still cannot save them, but at the very least we tried and with your help we will keep on trying. Thankfully most survive and go on to live out their lives here at the sanctuary or in 5* foster homes.
