Mary Berryman
Mary Berryman was our founder and chairman and a truly remarkable lady.
Mary loved all animals with a passion and couldn’t bear to hear of any suffering. What began as the care of a couple of ponies soon grew into a lifelong commitment to equine welfare.
It was devastating to all who knew Mary when she lost her battle against the cruelty of cancer in June 2008. An elegant, kind, warm-hearted lady, with a delightful sense of humour, she worked tirelessly for the animals at Flicka. Even during her illness the animals came first.
It was Mary's compassion and determination that shaped the values that still guide our charity today. Mary’s daughter, Judy Giles, and long-standing colleague, Laurie Stephenson, continue Mary’s legacy in the role of Directors, but Mary will always be our Chairman ‘from another place’. We miss her so much…

Her Journey's Just Begun
Don't think of her as gone away Her journey's just begun Life holds so many facets This Earth is only one Just think of her as resting From the sorrow and the tears In a place of warmth and comfort Where there are no days and years Think how she must be wishing That we could know today How nothing but our sadness Can really pass away And think of her as living In the hearts of those she touched For nothing loved is ever lost And she was loved so much E.
