Little Bertie

Dear Little Bertie was very bereft when his brother died suddenly two years previously then his owner who adored him, more than reciprocated by Bertie, also died suddenly, his absence was puzzling and very sad for Bertie who found himself alone.

Flicka was called - upon inspection found Bertie to be quite the aged little man in his late born around the 1980’s, unfortunately he was also entire (a stallion) which would make integration with other donkeys almost impossible. After consulting with the veterinary hospital they were happy to do the procedure as long as Bertie was brought into the hospital. There is always a higher element of risk for castration with older donkeys. We collected Bertie he was understandably reluctant to board our lorry after spending 20 years in his current home, but eventually treats and coercion helped.

Happily Bertie came through his surgery with flying colours, so much so that it was decided to focus on his teeth very soon after;  these were also affecting his health, ability to graze and eat hay. Once again Bertie bounced back immediately.

Little Bertie is bonded with Horace another elderly gentleman who was born in the 1970’s.
