A donkey sanctuary in Cornwall has announced its delight at a generous donation that will help some of its rescued equines with their ongoing medical needs. Haygain Ltd., a Berkshire-based equine health company, recently donated an innovative hay steamer product to make some of the sanctuary’s Special Care residents more comfortable.
The Flicka Foundation is a registered charity that has been rescuing donkeys, horses and ponies from conditions of abuse, neglect and abandonment for the past 25 years. It recently reported that a number of its residents, including Marla the donkey, have been struggling with ongoing breathing problems. Marla was saved from certain death in an emergency rescue carried out by The Flicka Foundation last year. She and her daughter Peaches were due to make the horrific journey to the abattoir in Italy for slaughter when the charity stepped in to help.
Since arriving at the sanctuary, Marla has been battling with serious health problems, exacerbated by her poor past treatment. She suffers from respiratory issues, akin to asthma in humans and the happy collaboration comes after Haygain representatives saw Marla’s story and wanted to help.
With over 100 equine residents at the sanctuary, many of them elderly or with ongoing medical issues, staff at the sanctuary say they are incredibly grateful to now have access to a Haygain steamer, having heard great things about its success in treating equines with broncho-constriction and recurrent airway obstruction. Haygain’s unique, patented method of steaming heats hay to high temperatures making it clean, dust free and palatable.
Flicka Foundation Director of Development, Claire Turnbull, said: “We were absolutely thrilled to receive the news that Haygain was sending us one of their products. Support of goods in kind from companies is much appreciated and really does make a huge difference to our work.”
Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, the charity has rescued and rehabilitated over 1000 animals since its inception in 1995. Members of the public are usually welcome to visit the donkeys year-round, but the sanctuary site has been closed since March due to the ongoing Covid pandemic.
Claire went on to say: “Haygain’s kind generosity has been such a wonderful boost, especially at what is proving to be a very difficult time for us. As for so many other charities, this is an incredibly worrying time for us financially. We rely heavily on visitors coming through our sanctuary gates to feed and care for our precious donkeys, but, due to the complexities of opening during the pandemic, we remain closed and we have sadly had to cancel all of our planned Anniversary events.”
Bryony Wallace, Marketing Manager at Haygain, said: “Having read Marla’s story we were delighted to be able to donate the HG One to the Flicka Foundation with theknowledge that steamed hay would improve Marla, and the other donkeys’, health. Our mission is to provide science backed solutions that solve the issues and implications that come with equine domestication and it is our pleasure to be able to help such a good cause.”
