Kerry Mitchell Treks to The Base Camp Of Everest for 'Flicka' and Smiletrain
Kerry volunteers here at Flicka two mornings every week, come rain or shine from early morning and gets stuck in to the muckiest, labour intensive work every time. We have come to depend and rely so much on her help here. In September Kerry went off on the expedition of a lifetime, made even more incredible by the fact she sustained a broken back last year in a riding accident......and hope she won't mind me saying this, but has a 'significant' big birthday very soon!!
ON 26th September 2011, Kerry journeyed to the base camp of Mount Everest, a huge undertaking of stamina, tenacity and strength. Mount Everest being the highest mountain in the world at a staggering 29,035 feet, a little under 5 ½ miles above sea level. Base camp is at 18,188 feet, just under 3 ½ miles above sea level, at this point travellers will be breathing in just 50% of their normal oxygen.
The expedition duration was 20 days, of which 14 days was actual training, acclimatisation and trekking. Kerry was successful in the expedition and said it was an experience of a lifetime. Well done Kerry!!
